A WordPress spiritual successor backed by Cloudflare sounds great in theory, but the headline feature, plugin isolation via Dynamic Workers, only works on Cloudflare's runtime. On any other host it's just a TypeScript CMS without the security model that justifies its existence. Open source but architecturally locked in.

I missed this. So they didn’t really solve much at all. I guess at least it’s compatible with other runtimes. But yeah, who would’ve guessed that Cloudflare software would (besides being vibeslop) prefer Cloudflare infra. This, of course, makes the software quite hard to adopt.

> Open source but architecturally locked in.

You hit the nail on the head.

Cloudflare's new business model is to find popular OSS projects, create a vibe coded alternative that only runs on Cloudflare's infrastructure.

Sadly, it looks more and more like it. It’s sad, because they were doing wonderful stuff.

Agreed. They are destroying their professional reputation.

I think pretty much every corporation that can have had this thought, has had it. Really "any popular software" where they can provide similar functionality. And I think this is going to happen more often before it becomes less common.

Workerd (the platform for Workers) is open source though? You could run your own? And people do run their own, at least according to Cloudflare.

Open source runtime, not the orchestration layer on top.

Are you saying that by providing a globally available service, they're engaging in vendor lock-in, because otherwise you'd have to build your own globally available and distributed service...? ...yeah?

But if you wanted to run Workerd on EC2 or Google Cloud or whatever, you could...so not really sure how that applies here.

You cannot say you’re the spiritual successor to WordPress, if your software doesn’t support running plugins out of the box on arbitrary installs. WordPress is very easy to host and scale, you only need a basic server and a CDN. A spiritual successor would follow that and also have all the new shiny stuff.

Maybe other runtimes should copy dynamic workers.

Interesting comment: "if Iran ends up responsible for regime change in the US, i will be overjoyed as i die from irony"

And it is more than likely. US and Iran probably can’t defeat each other militarily (us obviously can, but it requires full scale ground invasion which is not even contemplated at the moment). And both can’t back out of the conflict. So the likely outcome is that the conflict escalates until one of the regimes snaps and it becomes to somehow politically possible to back out.

Collapse of the regime in Iran seems unlikely at the moment because it’s hard and zealous dictatorship with unlimited power and will for violence within the country. In the US OTOH the elections are coming. An administration that started a stupid and absolutely preventable war and then effectively lost faces quite a challenge there despite everything else. This seems like a perfect moment for Iran to create a deterrent for US: attacking us ends your presidency.

USA cannot do a full scale invasion without major internal unrest.

If the newest batch of 10,000 is approved, we're up to 17,000 combat troops deployed for this. (Marines there as of Mar 27, another 3,500 in about two weeks, and then at least 1 battalion of the 82nd Airborne, plus another 10,000 requested)

I have heard other units getting pre-mobilization / warnings.

(This would not nearly be enough troops for large scale ground conflict, but it might be enough to go into the island tunnels looking for drones and ballistic missiles while the US tries to hold open the straight by force for... However long that takes)

This is all fine and well, but misses one little detail: drones. In the past conflicts US troops were more or less unreachable for the enemy unless they were advancing on the ground in a challenging terrain like dense jungles or mountains, where an enemy could ambush them. Other then that, US had air superiority, overwhelming firepower and excellent reconnaissance.

After the war in Ukraine things are very different. US troops are not safe as long as they are reachable by an FPV done, i.e., the enemy has to only make it ~20km to US positions. Given the area and terrain in Iran this will be happening all the time. So any troops positioned on Iran's territory will be under constant attacks by FPV drones. This means heavy casualties.

But even if the US forces will manage to clear the FPVs, this is still not enough, because there are dozens of other types of winged long range drones, the most famous being of course Shahed. They are less precise and not so deadly for the troops. They are also much easier to intercept. But that means that you effectively can't set up a safe stationary base, because it will be attacked by hundreds of drones from hundreds of miles away 24x7. There is not enough interceptors to stop that.

This means that a new approach will have to be used by US armed forces which they never tried before. This guarantees heavy losses on the initial stage which will raise a real political shitstorm back home. It looks like the current administration doesn't particularly care about that, but chances are they will not be able to contain the consequences.

> This is all fine and well, but misses one little detail: drones.

That's why A-10s are patrolling the 6 mile wide straight for 2 hours a flight. They can take out the larger Iranian drones much cheaper than any other platform we have. The small dones can't get very far and the US is exceptional at electronic warfare. But that doesn't really change anything, it just maintains the status quo of the straight being too risky for oil tanker insurers.

Ultimately, even if the US goes into the island tunnels after the ballistic missiles and larger drones, it would take huge sums of money to try and keep it open militarily for... who knows how long.

Yes, in principle, this (limited ground invasion to protect the straight) can be done. The cost - both in lives, money and political capital - will be enormous.

One comment though.

> The small dones can't get very far and the US is exceptional at electronic warfare.

There is currently one county in the world which is exceptional in electronic warfare against drones - Ukraine. Then there is Russia. Everybody else is leagues behind, including US. Without real combat experience and proven technologies ready for deployment all your money and fancy equipment are worth nothing. THAADs have the most advanced radars, did it help them in UAE recently?

In Ukraine they basically had to build a network of mini-factories with 3d printers and ad-hoc repurpose of old weapons right behind the front lines. This is to be able to counter Russian drones by enabling fast iteration on EW. US has nothing like that in current doctrine and it’s not clear if this can even be deployed in an expeditionary corps model.

I’m not saying of course that it’s impossible for US to open the straight by military means or to defeat IRGC otherwise, it’s just that it’s a very hard task which got even harder after advancement in drones.

> There is currently one county in the world which is exceptional in electronic warfare against drones - Ukraine.

Where do you think they are getting that data?

Fwiw, peak deployments to Afghanistan was ~100k troops. Iran is ~2x the land mass and population.

IRGC is also 10x more advanced than whatever forces were in Afganistan.

Same IARC group does not equal same risk. Group 1 just means the evidence is strong, not that the danger is equivalent. Smoking increases lung cancer risk by 2,000-3,000%. Daily processed meat increases colorectal cancer risk from around 4.5% to 5%. calling bacon "cigarettes in meat form" is wildly misleading.

Yes, I know that, my point is we know, almost definitely, that processed red meat causes cancer.

For many processes ingredients, like aspartame, we don't know. We're pretty sure it doesn't cause cancer. But from the way people talk about aspartame versus pastrami, you wouldn't know that.

And I stand by what I said about bacon. It's health detriments are much much worse than just colorectal risk - it heightens your risk of almost all cancers, similar to tobacco, due to inflammation and free radicals. And that's not even touching on heart disease, which is the more realistic concern.

It is good provocation even if it is poor analogy.

This is because bacon is more like cigarettes than most people assume, even if far less dangerous in practice.

Like another example is "sugar is poison." which is also structured as a factual equivalence and also gesturing at something real and also designed to land as a stronger claim than the evidence warrants.

I am confused why the announcement page says CCX33 in USA "Old price" is €59.49 but their main pricing page shows €50.49 for CCX33 in USA

Announcement page: http://docs.hetzner.com/de/general/infrastructure-and-availa...

Pricing page: https://www.hetzner.com/cloud/

I assume that's with/without tax. Those German prices would be inclusive of their 19% VAT.

He needs to be in prison.

He/FB was very against Trump/MAGA during his first tenure with the "fact check teams" verifying majority of popular opinions on FB, until before second election Trump posted that Zuckerberg should be in prison for meddling and giving Democrats their positive push. Nothing happened until Trump won second term, then the fact check teams were gone and Zuckerberg donated 1 million to Trump. Here Google AI will say it better than I can:

Donation: Meta's $1 million donation to the inauguration fund was a departure from previous years, aimed at fostering goodwill with the new administration.

Relationship Repair: Following years of tension and accusations of anti-conservative bias, Zuckerberg has taken steps to align with the MAGA movement, including dining with Trump at Mar-a-Lago.

Policy & Structural Changes: Meta has made several changes, including reducing professional fact-checking, appointing UFC CEO Dana White (a Trump ally) to its board, and hiring high-profile Republican policy staff.

Motivations: The moves are seen as an attempt to avoid further regulation or antitrust action from the Trump administration, especially regarding artificial intelligence and business operations.

Edit: in this instance, stay out of jail card costed $1 million.

Well, not a "stay out of jail" card. It was a "quit having to worry that maybe 1) Trump actually means it, and 2) the courts will go along, and 3) my legal team can't save me.

Under current circumstances, the odds that Trump could have had Zuckerberg jailed for anti-Trump fact checking are very close to zero.

Seriously.

Mark's got 250 billion dollars, founded a 2 trillion dollar company, and is quite possibly the wealthiest self-made person alive today. It is highly likely Mark also possesses some form of security clearance from the NSA related to issues adjacent to his company. It it also likely that Mark has some form of kompromat

Donald Trump is a pedophile and a lying grandstander who has always talked tough and backed down when up against someone who knows what they are doing.

Donald Trump could try to put Mark in jail. Mark has hundreds of billions of dollars to prevent the government from touching him. It wouldn't happen. The second Donald Trump tried shit, Mark would simply buy the top 100 law firms in the nation, and have them work together to stop Trump, and Trump would back down.

I wasn't voting for Trump, but if you have a credible evidence that "Trump is a pedophile" then you should immediately go to your nearest police station and report it. Otherwise you might be found in a lot of legal trouble for aiding and abetting "a pedophile" even if unintentionally.

With that being said, I don't think you know much about how litigations work. Buying 100 top law firms and having I presume all those lawyers working on your case does not help you win your case; judges do not get intimidated by the law firm you use. And that's like saying drinking 100x more protein will get me muscles 100x faster.

Trump trying to put Mark in jail is all that needs to happen for a starter. He could cost his company billions; once they done with FB and all the political power then can rain, the stock would be some 80% down. Mark would be worth 90% of what he has now and would be radioactive for any future business endeavors. I mean it should be clear at this point that President of USA does have a power to destroy your life and/or business. He doesn't need to put you in prison to end your life. And Mark wouldn't pay $1 million bribe if he would think otherwise.

Fun fact about North Carolina: Venus Fly Traps only grow naturally within about a 75-mile radius around Wilmington, NC.

Try to upgrade to IE8, I've heard it's awesome.

I think I would use this. I am the kind of person who needs to write things down immediately when they come into my head or I will forget them. I picture wearing it on my ring finger, button down, and use my thumb to press the button, is that realistic or would it be uncomfortable that way?

Have to say, love the typography on this site. Did some quick digging and the headings font is an Adobe font called Forevs, with a similar Google font being Fraunces.

I recently did a comprehensive panel of my own volition with Quest Labs and was pleasantly surprised by the entire process. It was super easy to schedule, affordable, and their online platform is surprisingly sleek.
