If you just have a straight pipe, sewer gases come out, which you really don't want. As far as I know, there is no "processing" of the cartridges; they are just thrown out after they reach the end of their lifespan.

So instead of more water down the drain you fill the dumpster with the cartridge... which you then recycle, of course.
