The concept was tried with Windows 8; they had to go back to offering both desktop and touchscreen options. Based on my experiences using an iPad, iPhone, and a variety of mac laptops, I don't see how this could be practically different.

Touch interfaces take up too much space on lap/desktops, and desktop interfaces are inconvenient to the point of not working with touch.

Still using the same platform. The idea is to use responsive design rather than different UI frameworks.
