Seeing the OPs question, I'd might add another feature which I feel is tricky.
Backup of data is pretty simple (I guess most HN user could easily make an simple upload/backup app for photos quite easily).
- But what about searching...
That moment when you're looking for a specific moment or latest photos of your dog? or pool to find a specific pool.
- Dupe detection.
Those unique features that for example, Dropbox is an inferior tool for the job.
Shit yeah, curation is much more time consuming than backup. As true for family photos and videos as it is for music, movies, and TV shows.
I put photos and videos in separate folders, and then subfolder for year, subfolder for month. Within the per-month folders I rename those photos / videos from their defaults to something that describes their content, eg:
"Daughter cracking the shits in egg and spoon race"
Or
"Daughter getting chased by duck".
The ones we want to re-live.
This takes long time reviewing each and every photo and video though. I'm only up to 2014...
