Gurlic is one. I think it's a great site with a lot of potential; a lot of overlap with HN at the moment but with a more general bent.

Arts & Letters Daily is another, although there's no discussion.

Thanks, I will check them out. What I like of HN is how upvotes drive news up and discussion. Also the community being small, content quality is very high
