I think starting with HSL (as opposed to e.g. Oklab) is a mistake. (EDIT: the following claim was a mistake on my part.) Note this from the results:

IMO the palette does not have decreasing luminance. To my eye, on a color corrected monitor, luminance seems to peak at yellow.



"Yellow is given the highest luminance, as it only looks yellow when bright. After choosing two other colours — a red and a blue in this case — the luminance can then be calculated for the other hues."


Ah thanks, I realize I misread it. It's "smoothly increasing and decreasing", meaning it drops off on either side.
