If you want the simplest way to run Postgres on a Mac, have a look at http://postgresapp.com/, or `brew install postgres`

I'm new to Macs. brew returns with command not found. I thought it was installed by default...perhaps not? Also, I have Postgres installed already.

brew is homebrew and as a new mac user you will want and adore it.

its a package manager, but more than that it has scripts to handle the mac's strange edge cases.
