I second this. The most amazing thing to me is that they still keep many of those really old machines and peripherals: the Colossus and more, up and running.

It's one thing to see those historic computers on display, it's a whole new level seeing them running, producing heat and noise!

That colossus is a replica, the original machines were all destroyed

That's true. I forgot that. Still impressive to see live action though.

I didn't realize that when posted it. :( If anyone could help amend the title with the year...

Don't worry about it, if it hasn't been posted before and has evergreen value then posting it like that is fine by me. The 'news' in Hacker News is not to be taken literally.

This happens to me on Android as well and it has always been like this. Would love to know why a phone call needs to block all other actions except accept/reject a call.

Huh. What manufacturer? When unlocked, stock Android has had incoming calls as a notification rather than whole screen for years.

When screen is locked it is probably still full screen.

Many crap reskins (Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei) break the ability to hide call notifications. It's absolutely awful.

This is one of the problems of Android's model. By being so open to customization, any branch's weirdness gets mixed in with "Android", because there are too many variations and not enough linguistic ability to name them all clearly and consistently in conversation.

If I'm getting a call while using my Pixel, I just get a notification with quick-action button for accept, deny, and screen.

To be fair, the device is nominally a telephone with a few extra bells and whistles.

I didn't pay $1000 for a "telephone with a few extra bells and whistles"

This is the first time I've heard of Lobst.rs. Looks like a HN clone more targeted towards programming. Thanks!

Excuse the original title being politics-related, the actual content is not much so.

Seeing topics about gender equality and workplace diversity pop up on HN from time to time, I'm hoping this might spark some good conversation around women leadership and not on the politics side of things.

Second this. I moved away from SequelPro about a year ago once the app started to crash occasionally. TablePlus isn't as feature rich but it's fast, uncluttered and pretty stable.

Any non-"success porn" sites you might recommend?

I know this differs between people but I'd be interested to know what sites you view as the opposite of those listed.

They're nice, but I feel that these communities will evolve into success porn unless actively checked.

Facebook? Just have friends less successful than you ;)

I read his book with the very same title. The history of glass, hygiene, etc. especially in the context of civilization is definitely eye opening!

Do you happen to remember how much you bought it for?

Just wondering if it was much more expensive (inflation-adjusted) than a modern one. As there are claims that products these day are made less durable in exchange for being more affordable/accessible.

Sorry, I have no recollection of how much I paid. That was a long time ago. It's definitely true that devices are ridiculously cheaper today. I paid >$1000 in 1980 dollars for an Apple ][. Today you can get a Raspberry Pi Zero for $5. I also don't think that the hardware is that much less durable. I have an iPhone 4S that is still going strong. The real problem IMO is not that things are less reliable, but that they're built to be disposable rather than repairable and upgradeable.

> I also don't think that the hardware is that much less durable. I have an iPhone 4S that is still going strong.

That depends on the price range. An iPhone 4s does not entirely consist of glue whereas I have seen lots of cheap Android phones without a single screw. I hope no one ever begins to use heat plastic fusing like e.g. chargers do...

Genuinely curious. I wonder how a partnership between competitors like this usually starts off? Someone near the top (i.e. mamagement) of each company say "Hey, we are behind on this. Can we borrow it?". Or their staff talk and suggest it up? Or else? Does this happen all the time but few would only make it through? Or these discussions rarely happen?
